Day Tour

Day Tour

Our full-day tour departs the Coronach Tourist Information Booth at 9:30am, winding through the Big Muddy Badlands spectacular scenery to Castle Butte then on to Big Beaver. Next, we will take you to our Heritage schoolhouse, where you will be able to eat your lunch, which can be purchased in advance or brought with you. After our schoolhouse, we head to the outlaw caves! Discover why the Big Muddy Valley was known as Station #1 on Butch Cassidy’s Outlaw Trail. The caves were once used as hideouts for famous outlaws, such as, Sam Kelly and Dutch Henry. The days adventures wind down with stops at different sacred Indigenous sites.

  • Castle Butte – One of Saskatchewan’s seven wonders and relic of the ice age, was used as a landmark by the Indigenous People, NWMP, outlaws and settlers
  • Aust’s General Store -” If we don’t have it, you don’t need it!” Experience Big Beaver’s small town country store that covers 4,000 sq. ft., sells a little bit of everything, and is a popular coffee stop for visitors and residents. Souvenirs available for purchase. Closed Wednesday afternoons, Sundays and stat holidays.
  • Big Beaver Nature Centre – Filled with locally found and donated artifacts. These include items such as sandstone concretions, Indigenous stone tools, ancient seashells from the “Three sister” formation and a large collection of mounted wildlife
  • Sam Kelly’s Outlaw Caves – The caves, which were originally wolf dens, were enlarged and used as living quarters by the Nelson-Jones gang. Another cave, a short distance away, was used for hiding their saddle horses.
  • 3 Sacred Indigenous Sites including a Ceremonial Circle, Turtle Effigy & Buffalo Effigy.
  • Heritage School House – authentically restored to provide a glimpse of the lifestyle of the early settlers.
